New York City – a place that sparks a sense of wonder in even the most cynical of hearts. It’s a city that’s been immortalized in countless films, from the yellow cabs speeding through the bustling streets to the towering Empire State Building that dominates the skyline. And for me, it’s a city that’s held a special place in my heart for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been enamored with the idea of strolling through the streets of Manhattan, gazing up at the towering skyscrapers that make up the iconic skyline, and getting swept up in the fast-paced energy of the city that never sleeps.

Finally, in 2019, my dream was about to become a reality. We had everything set in place – flights were booked, Kali and Nala had a sitter, and we were ready to take on the adventure of a lifetime. While we do have friends in New York, they weren’t able to host us due to prior engagements. But that was no problem, as we were thrilled to book a hotel in the heart of the financial district, surrounded by everything the city had to offer.

As we boarded our flight from Munich on December 23rd, our hearts were racing with excitement and anticipation.

How we accidentally played hide and seek in Reykjavik

As we embarked on our journey to our final destination, we found ourselves stopping over in Reykjavik. Little did we know, this layover would be the beginning of a love affair with Iceland. From the plane, we gazed out the window, transfixed by the stunning and awe-inspiring landscape that stretched out before us, we were captivated by the raw, natural beauty of the land, and in that moment, we knew that one day we would return to explore this magnificent island.

Let me tell you about the time my husband Christian disappeared in Reykjavik airport. It was like a bad magic trick, he was there one minute and gone the next. Poof! It was like some sort of Icelandic witchcraft!

Vanished into thin air, leaving me alone to deal with the security guards who were becoming increasingly annoyed with my constant questions about his whereabouts.

I mean, I get it, I must have asked like a hundred times, but who wouldn’t panic when their husband is MIA in a foreign country? But every time I asked, they just pointed me to the “other side” of the airport. What kind of vague directions were those? I was convinced I was going to have to go all Liam Neeson on Iceland and hunt down my missing husband.

But let me back up a bit. We had to go through security again upon landing, and Christian was carrying all of our camera gear and BOTH of our cellphones. I know, I know…rookie mistake. And of course, his scanner light turned red, so he was whisked away for a thorough search while I waited, wondering what fresh hell awaited us.

Luckily, after what seemed like an eternity (okay, it was only 20 minutes), he emerged from the depths of the airport, and we made it to our flight just in time. But let me tell you, I had never been so relieved to see his face in all my life.

Next stop – New York City

After almost ten hours of traveling, we finally landed in the city that never sleeps – the concrete jungle where dreams are made of.

I remember Christian always mentioning, that he is more of a nature kind of guy and cities are not that interesting for him. However, that changed the split second we stepped out into the bustling streets of Manhattan, feeling like we were living in a movie. The bright lights, the towering buildings, and the energy of the city filled us with an uncontainable sense of joy and excitement. It was the beginning of a magical journey, one that would leave an indelible mark on our hearts forever.

World Trade Memorial

As soon as we arrived at our hotel, we were eager to start exploring our neighborhood. Despite feeling tired from the long flight and jet lag, we were determined to make the most of our time in New York City. We walked for less than five minutes and suddenly found ourselves standing in front of the World Trade Center Oculus. As we entered the building, we were left in awe of its architecture.

Designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava and envisioned by Daniel Libeskind as part of the World Trade Center masterplan, the Oculus is a magnificent structure. Its white metal-clad steel ribs extend upward and outward, symbolizing a hand releasing a dove. The structure’s positioning serves as a poignant reminder of the events of September 11, 2001. It is oriented with the sun’s solar angles on every September 11th from 8:46 am to 10:28 am, aligning with the exact moments when the first plane struck and the second tower collapsed. The central skylight is perfectly aligned with this orientation and floods the Oculus floor with a beam of light.

The Oculus serves as a major transportation hub for the city, housing 12 subway lines, the World Trade Center PATH station, and dozens of retailers. It welcomes over a million people each week. The main floor is bustling with commuters, shoppers, and visitors, and features weekly events ranging from farmers’ markets and art exhibits to musical performances and retail events.

In addition to its transportation and retail functions, the Oculus also provides access to the entire 16-acre World Trade Center campus, including private entries into commercial office towers such as One World Trade Center, 3 World Trade Center, and 4 World Trade Center. The Oculus even connects to Brookfield Place via the West Concourse. Exploring this magnificent structure left us with an even greater appreciation for the resilience and spirit of New York City.

As we walked through the 9/11 Memorial, we couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of sadness wash over us. The pools, each occupying the footprint of the former North and South Towers, were an eerie reminder of the tragedy that had occurred here. The largest manmade waterfalls in North America cascaded down into the pools, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere in contrast to the bustling city around us. The sound of the falling water was almost hypnotic, drawing us into a state of reflection and contemplation.

Architect Michael Arad’s words echoed in my mind – the pools represented “absence made visible.” Each time I looked into the depths of the pools, I couldn’t help but feel the immense loss and the void left behind by the tragic events of that day. The names etched into the memorial only added to the weight of the moment. Seeing the names of those who lost their lives on that fateful day sent shivers down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. Despite the passage of time, the emotions stirred within me were just as raw and painful as they were on that tragic day.

There’s no place like New York during the holidays!!!

Get ready for an exhilarating day in the city that never sleeps! We kicked off the day with a mouth-watering breakfast at “Le Pain Quotidien“, where Andreea indulged in some delicious vegan treats, including Avocado toast, ginger tea, and blueberry muffins.

Before starting our day’s adventure, we had to make a quick stop at the B&H store. Christian had been researching for hours on the perfect lenses for his Sony Alpha 7III, and he finally found what he was looking for. It was the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8, known for its superior optical quality, versatility, and advanced features.

The B&H store, located in Midtown Manhattan, is a one-stop-shop for all photography and videography enthusiasts. The store boasts of an extensive collection of cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, tripods, and other accessories from leading brands like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and more. The store’s knowledgeable staff helped Christian make an informed decision about the lenses, explaining its features and benefits.

As we stepped out of the store with our new Tamron lenses in tow, our anticipation for exploring the city through the lenses grew with every passing moment. We were eager to capture the vibrant energy and stunning beauty of the city with the improved clarity and precision that the lenses provided. The world seemed to be more vivid and vibrant, and we were excited to see the city from a new perspective.

—–

But that was just the beginning of the adventure because today one of our main goals was one of the most exciting spots in the city during the holiday season –

the Rockefeller Building!

It was Christmas Eve, and we could feel the energy in the air as we made our way to see the iconic Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the building, and our hearts were pounding with excitement.

This iconic tree stands tall at 75 feet and is decorated with over 50,000 twinkling LED lights and a stunning Swarovski crystal star atop it.

The tradition of having a Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center dates back to 1931 when a group of construction workers placed a small tree on the site as a way to lift their spirits during the Great Depression. Since then, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has become a beloved holiday tradition, attracting millions of visitors each year.

This towering and magnificent Christmas tree is not the only attraction at Rockefeller Center during the holidays! Surrounding it are also stunning angel statues that add to the magical atmosphere of the holiday season. And to make the experience even more exciting, an ice skating rink is set up in front of the tree, creating a joyful winter wonderland for visitors to enjoy

As we made our way through the crowds of people, the holiday spirit was palpable. People of all ages, races, and backgrounds had gathered to marvel at the dazzling tree, take pictures, and soak in the festive atmosphere. The air was filled with the scent of roasted chestnuts and hot cocoa, and carolers could be heard singing in the distance.

I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical moment with Christian. It was a reminder that despite our differences, the holidays have the power to bring us together and inspire us with hope and joy. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree had truly lived up to its reputation as a symbol of holiday cheer and a beacon of hope for all.

I must confess, my emotions got the best of me and I ended up shedding a couple of joyful tears…but shhh, let’s keep that between us.

Our next stop was the one and only Times Square.

As we stepped out of the subway station, the energy of the place hit us like a wave. It was a sensory overload of lights, sounds, and people. The tall buildings around us were adorned with bright, colorful screens, advertising everything from Broadway shows to the latest fashion trends.

The bustling crowds flowed in every direction, like a current in a river. We weaved our way through the sea of people, taking in the sights and sounds of the city that never sleeps. The air was filled with the sounds of horns honking, street performers playing music, and people chattering excitedly.

As we made our way through the crowds, our new Tamron lenses were put to the test. We captured every detail of the vibrant scene, from the flashing screens to the bustling crowds. It was like being in a movie, and we were the stars.

The iconic Times Square ball stood tall above us, reminding us that we were in the heart of the city, where anything can happen. It was a true cinematic experience, and we were living it to the fullest.

Navigating the NYC subway: Just pray you end up where you want to go! Nah, just kidding.

Listen up folks, I’m gonna give you the lowdown on how to handle the NYC Subway – it’s gonna be a bumpy ride, so hold on to your hats, bags, and anything else that’s not nailed down. And if you’re lucky enough to find a seat, make sure it’s not someone’s lap. Remember to stand clear of the closing doors, unless you’re into that kind of thing. And if you’re lost, just ask a friendly New Yorker for directions

Alright, so picture this: New York City is like a big, delicious pizza, and the subway system is the cheese that holds it all together. Just like how you need to choose the right toppings for your pizza, you also need to choose the right subway line to get to where you want to go.

Now, let’s say you’re standing in the middle of Manhattan and you want to go uptown (which means going north) or downtown (which means going south). It’s pretty simple, actually. All you need to do is look at the signs in the subway station and find the train that’s headed in the right direction.

For example, if you want to go uptown to Central Park, look for signs that say “Uptown” or “North” and find a train that’s headed that way. And if you want to go downtown to the Statue of Liberty, look for signs that say “Downtown” or “South” and hop on a train that’s headed in that direction.

It’s important to pay attention to the subway lines, too. Each line has a different color and a different name (like the red 1 train or the green 4 train), so make sure you’re getting on the right one. And don’t worry if you get confused at first – even native New Yorkers get lost in the subway sometimes!

But here’s a pro tip: if you’re really stuck, just follow the crowds. New Yorkers are always in a hurry, so if you see a bunch of people running towards a certain train, it’s probably headed in the right direction.

So there you have it, folks. Just like a pizza needs cheese to hold it together, New York City needs the subway to get around. Just remember to look for signs that say “Uptown” or “Downtown,” pay attention to the colors and names of the subway lines, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. And always remember to hold on tight – those subway trains can be a wild ride!

The Top of the world

If you’re in NYC for the first time, one of the must-do activities is to visit at least one observation deck that will leave an indelible memory in your mind. With several options to choose from, it’s hard to pick just one. Personally, I have my all-time favorite, but I’m always eager to hear about your favorite observation deck and why it holds a special place in your heart.

1. Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is a famous landmark in New York City, located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan. It was completed in 1931, and at the time, it was the tallest building in the world, standing at 1,454 feet (443.2 meters) tall.

The idea for the Empire State Building began in the 1920s, during a time when there was a lot of competition among New York City developers to build the tallest building. The project was led by John J. Raskob, an executive with General Motors, and Alfred E. Smith, a former governor of New York.

Construction of the building began on March 17, 1930, and involved 3,400 workers. It was built in just over a year, with the help of modern construction techniques and materials such as steel and reinforced concrete. The building’s design was inspired by the Art Deco style, which was popular at the time, and it features intricate details and a distinctive spire.

The Empire State Building has been an important part of New York City’s history, serving as a symbol of the city’s strength and resilience. During World War II, the building was used as a lookout point for enemy aircraft, and it was also used as a radio and television transmitter. Today, it remains one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, with millions of visitors each year coming to take in the breathtaking views from the observation deck on the 86th floor.

Visiting the Empire State Building is a classic tourist activity that everyone should experience at least once in their life. From the top of this iconic skyscraper, you can see New York City in all its glory. The view is breathtaking, and it’s easy to understand why it’s one of the most popular attractions in the city.

As you ascend to the top, the anticipation builds. You know that you’re about to see one of the most famous and recognizable skylines in the world. When you finally reach the observation deck, the view is simply spectacular. You can see for miles in every direction, and the sheer scale of the city is awe-inspiring.

Looking down at the bustling city streets, it’s hard not to feel a sense of wonder and amazement. The Empire State Building offers a unique perspective on New York City, and it’s easy to see why so many people are drawn to this iconic landmark.

Sure, it may be a bit cheesy, but visiting the top of the Empire State Building is a must-do experience for anyone visiting New York City. It’s a chance to see one of the world’s most iconic cities from a completely different perspective, and it’s an experience that you’ll never forget.

2. Top of the Rock

Top of the Rock is an observation deck located at the top of the Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The Rockefeller Center was built during the Great Depression in the 1930s, and at the time, it was the largest private building project in modern history. The Rockefeller family wanted to create a “city within a city” and provide jobs for thousands of people during the economic crisis.

The Top of the Rock observation deck itself was not added until much later, in 2005, as part of a major renovation of the Rockefeller Center. It was designed to provide visitors with panoramic views of the New York City skyline, including the Empire State Building, Central Park, and the Hudson River. The observation deck is located on the 70th floor of the Rockefeller Center, and visitors can take high-speed elevators to reach the top in less than a minute.

One of the advantages of visiting the Top of the Rock is that it offers views of the Empire State Building, which cannot be seen from the Empire State Building’s observation deck. Additionally, the Top of the Rock is less crowded and has shorter lines than the Empire State Building, making it a popular alternative for visitors who want to enjoy breathtaking views of the city without the crowds.

Standing atop the Rockefeller Center, looking out at the stunning view of New York City, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed with awe. It offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the city, including the iconic Central Park.

As we stepped out onto the observation deck, the hustle and bustle of the city below was like a distant hum. We felt like we were on top of the world, with the vast expanse of New York stretching out before us in every direction.

The view of Central Park was particularly spectacular. It was like a lush oasis amidst the towering buildings and bustling streets. From up high, we could see the winding paths, the shimmering lakes, and the verdant trees, all nestled within the heart of the city.

As the sun began to set, the city transformed into a twinkling wonderland. The lights of the buildings and the neon glow of Times Square illuminated the night sky, and the view was nothing short of magical.

Visiting the Top of the Rock is truly a must-do experience for anyone visiting New York City. The view is unparalleled, and the experience is one that will stay with you for a lifetime.

3. One World Trade Center

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in New York City, look no further than the Observatory Deck at One World Trade Center. The building itself is a symbol of strength and resilience, having been built in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the observatory offers stunning views of the city and beyond.

From the moment you step into the elevator, you’ll feel like you’re being transported to the top of the world. In just 60 seconds, the elevator speeds you up to the 102nd floor, where you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the entire city. You’ll see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, and much more.

But the Observatory Deck isn’t just about the views. There are also interactive exhibits that teach visitors about the building’s history and construction, as well as the city’s rich cultural diversity. You can learn about the various neighborhoods of New York, listen to the stories of local residents, and even see a virtual sunset from the top of the tower.

Visiting the Observatory Deck at One World Trade Center is not only a breathtaking experience, but it’s also a chance to pay tribute to the resilience of New York City and the strength of the human spirit

Are you ready for the ultimate NYC view showdown? After braving the dizzying heights of all three observation decks, I can confidently say that my favorite is none other than… the Top of the Rock!

Maybe I’m a bit old-fashioned, but there’s just something about that view that takes my breath away every time. From the towering Empire State Building to the sprawling cityscape of Manhattan, it’s like you’re on top of the world. The feeling of being up there is simply unbeatable, and it’s no wonder why so many people choose the Top of the Rock for their once-in-a-lifetime NYC experience.

Don’t get me wrong, the other observation decks are amazing too, but the Top of the Rock just has that extra edge. It’s like you’re standing in the middle of the city, watching it all unfold beneath you. And at night, when the city lights up like a glittering wonderland, it’s pure magic.

So if you’re planning a trip to NYC and want to experience the best view in town, head to the Top of the Rock. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

The Brooklyn Bridge

The sun shone brightly, painting the New York skyline with a golden hue, and we knew that it was the perfect day to take on the Brooklyn Bridge. With hats and gloves in hand, we braced ourselves against the bitter cold and joined the throngs of tourists and locals alike, all with the same idea in mind: to take on the bridge that has become a symbol of New York City.

As we started our walk across the bridge, we couldn’t help but be amazed by the sheer size and majesty of it all. The cables stretched high into the sky, creating a stunning silhouette against the bright blue sky. We were not alone in our admiration; the bridge was bustling with activity as people from all over the world walked and cycled across its span.

But as we neared the halfway point, the wind started to pick up, and the bridge began to sway. It was a dizzying sensation, but at the same time, it added to the experience, making us feel like we were part of something truly monumental.

As we continued our journey, we were treated to breathtaking views of the New York skyline. The Empire State Building loomed large in the distance, while the Statue of Liberty stood proudly in the harbor below. It was a cinematic moment, one that we would remember for the rest of our lives.

And as we finally made it to the other side of the bridge, we felt a sense of accomplishment wash over us. We had conquered the Brooklyn Bridge, and in doing so, we had become a small part of its rich history.

DUMBO

If you’re planning a trip to New York City, chances are you’ve seen the countless Instagram posts and travel guides that rave about DUMBO. But what exactly is it? Well, DUMBO stands for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,” and it’s one of the most alluring neighborhoods in the city.

As you make your way to DUMBO, whether it’s by foot, ferry, or subway, the views of the city will take your breath away. And when you arrive, you’ll be greeted with an array of attractions that will keep you busy for hours.

But what makes DUMBO so special? It’s a combination of things, really. The neighborhood boasts incredible views of the Manhattan skyline and a waterfront park that is perfect for picnics or simply soaking in the scenery. And let’s not forget about the famous intersection of Washington Street and Water Street, where the Manhattan Bridge serves as a stunning backdrop for the perfect Instagram shot.

But it’s not just the views that make DUMBO a must-visit destination. The neighborhood’s industrial past adds to its charm, as you wander through converted warehouses and cobblestone streets. You’ll find a variety of trendy indie boutiques, upscale restaurants, and hip cafes that cater to all tastes. And for those who love art, DUMBO is home to numerous galleries and stages, including the historic St. Ann’s Warehouse.

Interestingly, DUMBO was not always the trendy neighborhood it is today. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the area was a bustling industrial hub that produced everything from cardboard boxes to Brillo pads. However, the decline of manufacturing after the Depression left the area largely abandoned. It wasn’t until the 1970s, when a wave of artists moved in, that the neighborhood began to thrive again.

So, if you’re looking for a unique experience in New York City, DUMBO should definitely be on your list. From its breathtaking views to its fascinating history, this neighborhood is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Manhattan Bridge

After a day filled with exploring the charming DUMBO neighborhood and admiring the stunning Manhattan skyline from the waterfront, we decided to make our way back to Manhattan by crossing the mighty Manhattan Bridge. While the Brooklyn Bridge may be the more iconic of the two, we were eager to experience the unique perspective that the Manhattan Bridge offers. And let’s be honest, it is definitely less crowded.

As we made our way across the bridge, we couldn’t help but be awestruck by the breathtaking views that surrounded us. From the towering skyscrapers of Manhattan to the picturesque neighborhoods of Brooklyn, the panorama before us was nothing short of magnificent.

But perhaps the most unforgettable sight of all was the view of the Brooklyn Bridge itself. From our vantage point on the Manhattan Bridge, we were treated to an incredible view of the iconic structure, its soaring arches and suspension cables stretching gracefully across the East River.

In that moment, I couldn’t help but break into a happy dance. The beauty of the scene before me was simply too much to contain.

Our Tips: As you can probably guess, both the Brooklyn Bridge and the iconic view of Dumbo are teeming with people during the day, which can make it nearly impossible to capture that perfect shot. But fear not, fellow photographers! We’ve got a tip for you. Plan to revisit these spots at night when the crowds have thinned and the city lights provide the perfect backdrop for your photos. That’s exactly what we did, and boy, were we rewarded. Not only did we get some stunning shots of the Manhattan skyline, and the Brooklyn Bridge, but we also managed to capture the picture-perfect view of Washington Street and Water Street in Dumbo. Trust us, it’s worth the wait!

With piping hot coffee steaming and mouth-watering bites safely stowed away in our bags, we set off towards our next adventure:

the High Line Park

Welcome to the High Line, an elevated park  that has taken green spaces to new heights. This public park is a one-of-a-kind urban wonderland that stretches for over a mile along the former New York Central Railroad on the west side of Manhattan.

What was once a railroad track, abandoned and left to decay, has been transformed into a breathtaking park, weaving through the bustling city and offering a unique perspective on the surrounding architecture and skyline. From the High Line, you can see the Hudson River, the Meatpacking District, and the Empire State Building in the distance, creating a backdrop that’s sure to leave you speechless.

The park’s design incorporates lush greenery, art installations, and unique seating areas, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll, a peaceful picnic, or a fun photo-op. The park has also become a hub for cultural events, live music performances, and pop-up markets, providing a platform for local artists, entrepreneurs, and creatives.

The High Line has truly become an oasis in the heart of the city, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a must-see attraction for both tourists and locals alike, providing a unique perspective on the city that’s impossible to find anywhere else.

Taking a break once in a while can do wonders for our well-being. And that’s exactly what we did in the High Line Park. We paused for a moment, taking in the stunning scenery, basking in the warmth of the sun and savoring every sip of our hot coffee and delicious treats. It reminded us to appreciate the simple things in life and to never underestimate the power of taking a moment to stop, breathe and soak up the beauty around us.

As our walk came to an end, your eyes were drawn to a gleaming structure that seems to rise up like a spiral staircase to the sky. This is the Vessel, a remarkable architectural wonder that towers over the Hudson Yards development like a modern-day Colossus.

The Vessel

…is a honeycomb-like structure made up of 154 flights of stairs, 80 landings, and nearly 2,500 individual steps. It stands at 150 feet tall and offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding cityscape.

But the Vessel is more than just a stunning work of art – it’s also a symbol of community and connection. Visitors from all over the world come to climb its intricate network of stairs and platforms, sharing in the experience of exploring its many twists and turns. The Vessel’s unique design invites you to interact with it in a way that’s both physical and emotional, as you climb higher and higher, taking in the stunning views and feeling a sense of exhilaration with each step.

So if you’re looking for a truly unforgettable experience in New York City, don’t miss the chance to visit the Vessel. Whether you’re an architecture buff, a nature lover, or simply someone who loves a good adventure, this stunning structure is sure to take your breath away.

As you walk through the streets, you’ll be transported to a world of Chinese culture and traditions. From traditional herbal medicine shops to authentic restaurants serving up steaming hot dim sum, there’s no shortage of things to see and experience.

One of the highlights of Chinatown is undoubtedly the street markets, where you can find everything from fresh seafood to exotic fruits and vegetables. The vibrant colors and smells are sure to leave a lasting impression on you.

And if you’re interested in history, be sure to check out the Museum of Chinese in America, which showcases the rich history and contributions of Chinese Americans in the United States.

Central Park: A Magical Oasis in the Heart of New York City”

Central Park, the sprawling oasis nestled in the heart of bustling New York City, is a place straight out of a fairytale. It’s hard to describe its enchanting beauty without feeling like you’re in a movie. As you step into the park, the noise and chaos of the city melt away, and you’re transported to a serene and magical world.

Winter may not have blessed us with snow during our visit, but Central Park was still a breathtaking sight to behold. The trees had shed their leaves, revealing the intricate network of branches that created a maze of natural sculptures. The crisp air added a refreshing bite to the atmosphere, and the peacefulness of the park was amplified as the crowds thinned out. It was a unique and enchanting experience, to say the least.

Central Park’s beauty is hard to put into words. Stunning bridges, beautiful gardens, and enchanting pathways await those who seek them out. The Bethesda Fountain is a sight to behold, its angelic statue reaching skyward in a pose of exultation. And if you’re lucky, you may stumble upon an artist playing their cello in the Bethesda Terrace Hall, creating a goosebumps-inducing memory.

But perhaps one of the most visited places in winter is the Ice Skating Rink. Imagine gliding across the ice, with the iconic New York City skyline as your backdrop. It’s an experience that will stay with you forever.

So of course we had to live this experience as well. So our friends Terri, Rob, Christian and I decided to make an unforgettable memory by ice skating in Central Park. I had this grand vision of myself gracefully gliding on the ice, doing pirouettes and triple axels like an Olympic champion. But let’s be real, that was never going to happen.

Christian and our friends were all seasoned skaters, with Christian even having played hockey in the past. Meanwhile, I looked like a baby penguin trying to navigate on a slippery surface for the first time. I was flailing my arms and legs around, barely managing to stay upright. And behold! As we skated on the glistening ice, the sky seemed to take notice of our presence. Soft, fluffy snowflakes began to gently descend from the heavens, as if the sky itself wanted to join in on our magical moment. It was as if the universe had conspired to make this memory even more enchanting and unforgettable. The snowflakes danced and twirled around us, and we couldn’t help but feel like we were in our own little snow globe, a magical world that only existed for us in that moment.

So you know what? it was also one of the funniest and most memorable moments of our trip. We may not have looked like Olympic athletes out there, but we sure had a blast trying. And hey, at least we didn’t break any bones…

The MET – is always a good idea

It’s a soggy day in the Big Apple, so we figured we’d avoid drowning in the rain by diving into the MET instead!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or simply the MET, is one of the most impressive museums in the world, located in the heart of New York City. Spanning over 2 million square feet, the MET offers a vast collection of artworks from different cultures and eras, ranging from ancient Egyptian mummies to Japanese samurai armor, Van Gogh’s Starry Night to contemporary installations.

As you enter the MET, you are greeted by the stunning Great Hall, a majestic space with towering columns, marble floors, and a soaring ceiling. From there, you can explore over 5,000 years of human creativity, starting with the ancient Egyptian galleries, where you can see mummies, sarcophagi, and intricate jewelry.

Moving on, you can marvel at the impressive collection of European paintings and sculptures, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Michelangelo. The MET also boasts an extensive collection of American art, including the famous Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze.

But the MET is not just about Western art. Its galleries of Asian art are equally impressive, showcasing exquisite examples of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art, including delicate scrolls, ceramics, and samurai armor.

Another highlight of the MET is its collection of musical instruments from around the world, from ancient Greek lyres to modern electric guitars. You can also explore the Costume Institute, where you can see stunning dresses and accessories from different eras, including iconic pieces worn by celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Beyoncé.

One of the most popular exhibitions at the MET is the Temple of Dendur, an ancient Egyptian temple relocated from its original site and reconstructed within the museum. Visitors can walk through the temple and admire the detailed hieroglyphics and carvings.

And if you’re a fan of contemporary art, the MET has you covered too. Its modern and contemporary art galleries feature works by artists such as Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Cindy Sherman, as well as installations that challenge your perception of space and time.

Overall, the MET is an incredible museum that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in ancient civilizations, European masterpieces, or contemporary art, you’re sure to find something that will captivate your imagination and leave you in awe.

Although the admission fee for adults is USD30, some may argue that it’s a bit steep, but personally, I believe that the experience of visiting the MET is priceless.

The Financial District: Where Money Talks and Buildings Reach for the Sky

Have you watched The Wolf of Wall Street? The Financial District is just like the movie set, but without the Quaaludes and FBI swarming the place. Or at least it was on the day we visited.. haha..just kidding.

The Financial District, also known as FiDi, is a bustling hub of business and finance in the heart of Manhattan. It’s home to the New York Stock Exchange, Wall Street, and some of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers.

Walking around the Financial District, you’ll feel a palpable energy in the air. The streets are lined with towering buildings that seem to stretch up into the clouds, and the crowds of people rushing to work create a sense of urgency and purpose.

One of the most famous landmarks in the Financial District is the New York Stock Exchange, where billions of dollars change hands every day. It’s an awe-inspiring sight, with its neoclassical façade and imposing columns. Even if you’re not a finance expert, it’s worth stopping by just to soak in the history and energy of the place.

But there’s more to the Financial District than just finance and skyscrapers. One of the most popular tourist attractions in recent years has been the Fearless Girl statue, which stands defiantly in front of the Charging Bull sculpture. The statue depicts a young girl with her hands on her hips, facing down the bull, and has become a symbol of female empowerment and strength. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the heart of the financial world, there’s still room for courage and resilience.

And speaking of: The Charging Bull statue is a staple in the Financial District and tourists can’t seem to resist rubbing its massive testicles for good luck. It’s not exactly clear how this superstition started, but it’s become a popular activity among visiting businessmen and tourists alike.

What’s even more impressive than the size of the Charging Bull’s cojones is the fact that people are willing to wait in a line just to touch them. It doesn’t matter if it’s freezing cold or pouring rain, people will do whatever it takes to get their hands on those giant golden-bronze balls.

Some might find this whole phenomenon a bit ridiculous, but hey, who are we to judge? If rubbing a statue’s balls brings someone good luck, then more power to them. Just be prepared to wait your turn if you’re planning on joining the queue to give those balls a good rub.

All in all, the Financial District is a fascinating and dynamic part of New York City that’s definitely worth a visit. Whether you’re a finance buff or just love the energy of the city, there’s something here for everyone. So come and explore the towering buildings, bustling streets, and powerful symbols that make this neighborhood so unique.

Next Stop – Grand Central Station

Grand Central Station is more than just a transportation hub, it’s a New York City icon that has been around since 1913. The main concourse alone is enough to take your breath away, with its high ceilings adorned with constellations and the famous four-faced clock in the center that has been a meeting spot for generations of New Yorkers.

But the real magic of Grand Central can be found in its secrets. The Whispering Gallery is a little-known spot where you can stand at opposite corners of the archways and whisper to each other, while the sound travels perfectly across the ceiling, allowing you to hear each other as if you were standing next to each other.

And let’s not forget about the stunning architecture and intricate details found throughout the station, from the majestic chandeliers to the ornate marble floors. It’s easy to see why Grand Central Station is considered one of the most beautiful train stations in the world.

The ceiling of Grand Central Station is definitely worth mentioning as well! It’s a magnificent work of art, depicting constellations and celestial figures painted on a cerulean blue background. The mural is so well-done that it creates an illusion of depth, making it look like you’re looking up at a starry sky instead of a flat ceiling. And to think that this masterpiece was almost destroyed in the 1970s! Thankfully, a group of passionate New Yorkers rallied to save the ceiling and restore it to its former glory. It’s definitely a must-see for anyone visiting the city.

Grand Central Station is also a foodie destination. The lower level dining concourse, also known as the Grand Central Market, is a food court that offers a wide range of delicious options for all tastes and budgets. From fresh seafood at the Oyster Bar to the famous Shake Shack burgers, you can find something to satisfy your appetite. Plus, the beautifully restored 1940s era design of the market adds an extra touch of charm to your mealtime.

Chelsea Market: A Food Lover’s Paradise

If you are a food lover and happen to be in New York City, then you absolutely cannot miss visiting the Chelsea Market. Located in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan, this historic building has been transformed into a gastronomic paradise that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Originally built in the 1890s, the Chelsea Market was once home to the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco), where famous snacks like the Oreo cookie were invented. The building was later used as a warehouse for food ingredients before being converted into the bustling market that it is today.

As you step inside the market, you’ll be struck by the beautiful architecture and design of the building. The exposed brick walls, steel columns, and wooden beams give the market an industrial feel, while the numerous food vendors and artisanal shops add a touch of creativity and charm.

One of the highlights of the market is the main hall, which boasts a stunning turquoise-tiled ceiling that dates back to the building’s Nabisco days. The ceiling is a must-see for anyone visiting the market, as it provides a glimpse into the building’s rich history.

But let’s talk about the food. The market features over 35 food vendors, ranging from fresh seafood and artisanal cheeses to baked goods and exotic spices. You can find everything from sushi and tacos to lobster rolls and pasta. There’s even a shop dedicated entirely to hot sauce!

Many of the food vendors offer vegan dishes, including vegan tacos, vegan sushi, vegan burgers, vegan baked goods, and more. Some of the popular vegan spots in Chelsea Market include Beyond Sushi, Cappone’s Salumeria, and Seed + Mill.

Another must-visit spot in the market is “Amy’s Bread,” a bakery known for their delicious artisanal bread and pastries.

One of the most interesting areas in the market is the “Artists and Fleas” section, where you can find handcrafted jewelry, vintage clothing, and other unique items from local artists and designers.

Speaking of food

New York City is a culinary mecca, and as a vegan, I’m always over the moon when I don’t have to choose between a plate of lettuce or a measly serving of fries. Luckily, the city that never sleeps has a vegan food scene that will knock your socks off! Whether you’re craving a slice of plant-based pizza or a juicy vegan burger, the Big Apple has got you covered. And don’t even get me started on the vegan Chinese food and decadent cakes available – it’s enough to make any herbivore’s heart skip a beat.

However, out of all the restaurants in the city, Blossom holds a special place in my heart as one of the absolute favorites.

blossom: (verb) to grow, to thrive, to flourish

The moment we walked in, we could smell the delicious aroma of their dishes wafting through the air.

The menu was so versatile that it was hard to decide what to order. Each dish was described in mouth-watering detail, making it hard to choose just one. But we finally settled on our picks and eagerly awaited our food.

When the dishes arrived, we were blown away by the flavors and presentation. The chefs had truly outdone themselves. We were so impressed that we decided to purchase their recipe book to try out some of their creations at home.

Unfortunately, the restaurant had run out of copies, but that didn’t stop the manager from making our day. He personally came to our table and offered us the only copy they had – the one used in their kitchen! We were over the moon with excitement and gratitude.

The people working at Blossom were not only talented and skilled in the kitchen, but also warm and welcoming. It was an experience that we will never forget and we cannot wait to go back for more.

As I reminisce about our time in NYC, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia. The streets illuminated with twinkling lights, the towering Christmas trees, and the jolly sight of Santa cruising through Central Park on his bicycle, all made our holiday season truly magical. Celebrating Christmas with our dear friends in the heart of the city is a memory that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

As I come to the end of this blog, I am reminded of the famous quote by Frank Sinatra, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.” New York City truly lives up to its reputation as the city that never sleeps and has something for everyone. It’s a place where dreams are made and memories are cherished. I am grateful for the experiences, the sights, the sounds, and the flavors that have left an indelible mark on my heart. I hope that you have enjoyed reading this blog as much as I have enjoyed writing it, and that it has inspired you to visit the city and create your own unforgettable memories. Until next time, New York, I’ll be missing you.
